As time goes by, the canals inevitably tend to fill up because of the constant deposition of anthropic sediments in the lagoon, of material washed away from the canal embankments and the material brought in by the natural ebb and flow of the water. It therefore becomes necessary to cyclically remove the sludge from the bed of the canal to avoid endangering navigation and prevent the degeneration of hygienic conditions.
There are two ways of dredging canals:
dredging in the water: this method uses large boats equipped with hydraulic shovels that collect the sludge; this type of dredging is limited to the central area of the canal to avoid damaging the embankment walls.
dredging dry canals: a section of the canal is isolated by waterproof partitions driven into the terrain. Special pumps lower the level of the water so that the works may proceed, initially with mechanical instruments and then manually; the sludge is then taken to dumping areas on specially-equipped boats.
I muri di sponda degli edifici e delle fondamente (i percorsi lungo i rii) sono costantemente sottoposti ad azioni di degrado. L’acqua salmastra, infatti, scioglie le malte che tengono insieme i mattoni e i muri perdono impermeabilità e compattezza, sgretolandosi. Inoltre l’acqua filtra attraverso la muratura, fino ad arrivare alle zone retrostanti il muro dalle quali viene dilavato il terreno, creando in molti casi dei vuoti interni che mettono ancora più a rischio le fondazioni dei fabbricati. Il dissesto viene aggravato dall’urto delle imbarcazioni e soprattutto dai moti vorticosi delle eliche che asportano facilmente i materiali già indeboliti. È indispensabile, quindi, che i muri di sponda vengano riparati e che si provveda a renderli di nuovo impermeabili all’acqua. Questo può essere realizzato soltanto in coincidenza con lo scavo in asciutto dei rii.
